The article brings closer the Lean Manufacturing concept, which is the foundation for increasing production enterprises' competitiveness. It describes how this term, originated by Toyota, evolved thanks to innovations introduced by Japanese engineer Taiichi Ohno. Toyota, being a leader in quality, reliability, and efficiency, became a model for other companies.
Lean Manufacturing is defined in various ways, resulting from its complexity and lack of a uniform Polish translation. The article seeks to systematize issues related to Lean, considering the evolution of the Toyota production system, scientific research, and general concept assumptions for companies of various industries and sizes.
In the Toyota context, key innovations include introducing the pull system, kanban system, and the “just-in-time” principle. These changes significantly reduced inventories and improved production flexibility. In the 80s, thanks to IMVP research from MIT, Lean Manufacturing gained global recognition.
These studies showed that the Toyota system, despite similarities to Ford's mass production model, can better adapt to multi-variety production in short series. Key elements here are teamwork, task standardization, and an integrated supplier network.
